Die Wilgers at a glance

Die Wilgers is one of the best known, most homely suburbs of Pretoria East.  Bordering onto Lynnwood, Die Wilgers has had many years to develop into an almost self-sufficient suburb, with little reason for some people to have to venture beyond its borders.  Predominantly a residential area, it has become fairly blended with a number of office parks, shopping centres, medical facilities, schools, retirement facilities and an exciting selection of entertainment including restaurants, pubs, cafes, tea-gardens and a few artistic and gardening outlets.  A beautiful, slightly more up-market suburb, Die Wilgers is fairly in demand by residents across the board, especially due to its location to major amenities such as the University of Pretoria, neighbouring schools such as Menlo Park Hoërskool and further away Pretoria Boys High School, Pretoria High School for Girls, Afrikaans Hoër Seunsskool en Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, the Pretoria CBD, corporate offices, embassies, medical facilities and with easy access to both the N1 and N4 highways.

Die Wilgers has mostly houses set on fairly large stands, while toward its outer edges, stretching north-eastwards, a greater selection of townhouse complexes, simplexes, estates and retirement communities have more recently been developed in, what is now known as, Equestria.  Anything not available within Die Wilgers can easily be accessed at the neighbouring suburbs such as Lynnwood, Equestria, Wapadrand and even the suburbs on the southern side of the Lynnwood and Bronberg Ridges.  

Venturing into the suburban areas of Die Wilgers one senses an overriding calmness and home owners ensure that the environment remains clean and well kept.  Closer to the main road of Lynnwood there is generally a fair amount of on-going activities due to the number of attractions on offer, both day and night.

CLIMATE:

Die Wilgers enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summer days, warm evenings and summer rains.  Winters are shorter and dry, generally comfortable but with a few scattered and intensely cold snaps in between.  Summer months start in September and stretches through to April while winter starts toward end April, beginning May through to August.   Being relatively flat and open, Die Wilgers sometimes receives frost on really cold mornings.  It enjoys beautiful greenery woven into its suburban living, a tell-tale sign that the well-tempered climate does well for natural growth and manicured gardens.

MAIN ACCESS ROUTES:

The main throughfare for Die Wilgers is Lynnwood Road, which, if travelling in a westerly direction, leads to the N1 highway as well as towards the more central areas of Pretoria.  To access the N4 highway one can take either Simon Vermooten Road or Solomon Mahlangu Drive.  Traffic can become quite congested during peak hours as Lynnwood Road is the main-feed if heading both toward town as well as in an easterly direction toward many of the newer suburban and corporate office park developments, shopping centres and schools of the more eastern areas of Pretoria.
