Mayville at a glance

Mayville, which is one of The Moot suburbs, lies at the very foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range and within easy range to the Wonderboom Nature Reserve.  It is a middle-class and older suburb with varying landscapes and activities surrounding it.

On its northern border is the ridge of the Magaliesberg, to the east is the rather industrious Steve Biko Road with vast amounts of car sales, panel-beating, mechanic and car part sales businesses, while to the south lies the Life Eugene Marais Hospital and to the west Parktown Estate and beyond that is the M1 which leads toward Pretoria West.

Houses are generally older in style and often need a fair amount of revamping, but this means that properties are well-priced should one want to benefit on stand size and then perhaps re-do the house and likely the landscaping.  There are also a number of flats and apartments available to the first-time home-owner or persons looking for affordable rental options.

Mayville brings with it an old-fashioned suburban feel where one could easily cycle to school, walk to the street corner wholesaler or take a late afternoon stroll through the park with a stop-over at the neighbour on the way back home.  Many of the properties in Mayville also host a fairly active home-industry community, including cottage and antique furniture repairs and sales, baking, accounting, insurance or tax services, tailor-making services and so forth.  A particularly pretty site within Mayville comes around October for a just a short while when the iconic Jakaranda trees are in full bloom.

CLIMATE:

Lying at the foothills on the southern side of the Magaliesberg Mountain range, Mayville is particularly well-sheltered against the elements, over and above the fact that it also enjoys a touch of the sub-tropical climate that is particularly prevalent just on the other side of the ridge.  During the summer months the homes, gardens and streets are well shaded, under the large old trees, from the hot summer sun. 

Days warm up from early in the morning and can easily reach 30 degrees Celsius and up.  Rain takes place during summer and fortunately Pretoria is often blessed with mid to late afternoon showers, breaking the heat and leading to warm but comfortable evenings. 

Winters can be quite cold during the early morning hours but generally warm up to be pleasantly comfortable for most of the day.  On the odd occasion, when temperatures become unusually low, there may be frost.

• Via the R101: 14 minutes / 6 kms
• Via Es'kia Mphahlele Dr / M1: 18 minutes / 9 kms
• Via R101 / Thabo Sehume St: 16 minutes / 7 kms

MAJOR ACCESS ROUTES:

Mayville has a number of small access roads leading in and out of the suburb, however it also enjoys fairly easy access to a number of major throughfares.  These include the M1 leading out of Mayville at its northern point and which eventually ties up with N4 Highway.  At the northern entrances, but heading south, the M1 becomes the R101 which cuts through the middle of Mayville leading toward the centre of Pretoria.  Fred Nicholson Drive lies to the south which leads to the M1 and then toward Pretoria West and Steve Biko Road lies to the east which leads to the centre of Pretoria.
